Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities
- Wexford Ridge (community)
This volunteer opportunity involves going to an after school program designed for children of low income backgrounds and spend time playing with the kids. Volunteers will take cabs from Memorial Union at 3:15 on Fridays and spend approximately two hours with the children. Volunteers usually return after 5:30. This is a weekly volunteer opportunity although it is not necessary to go every Friday. The first opportunity for to get involved in this is February 9th. People interested should sign up with Erica or Katherine and should go to the Morgridge Center in the Red Gym and see Debi to get a participant card. This is for the cab services. Come join us and bring a smile to some kids’ faces!
- Meriter Retirement Center (community)
The Meriter Retirement Center is looking for anyone to come in and spend time with the residents. In particular they are looking for people to help in the Alzheimer’s Center and people have volunteer sessions have gone from 7 to 9PM. You can come in by yourself or with a group and plan activities of your choice. This looks great on resumes and is great for people going to school in related fields. Before volunteering you have to go through a one hour volunteer sessions. Contact information for Ms. Lavati who organizes the volunteer sessions can be received from Erica.
- Monona Bay Shoreline Cleanup (conservation)
With this group we will work on shoreline cleanup around Lake Monona. The group meets at Brittingham Place at 10 AM and the work goes until noon. Tools and garbage bags are provided. The first meeting will be on February 10th and they try to meet on the second Saturday of each month. They will meet on March 10th and April 21st (there is a conflict with the second Saturday so it was moved to this date for April). Erica has offered to organize a group to go down together if there is enough interest so let her know.
- Arboretum Cleanup (conservation)
There have been no dates provided yet for this activity although it will likely take place on a Saturday morning. A picnic may be organized for after the event. We will let you know when there is more information. People participating had a lot of fun last semester with this so come join us when we do go!
- Eagle Heights (community)
The residents of the Eagle Heights apartments (located at the end of the 80 Bus Route past the hospital) have a monthly meeting that takes several hours. Many of the residents have children that need to be taken care of for the meeting which only lasts a couple of hours. There has not been a date set yet but more information will come out when we know. A free pizza dinner is also provided for those who come and play with the kids.
10 Thousand Hour Show
- Erica setup ISV as an organization on the website
- Log your hours on www.volunteeryourtime.org
- If you do 10 hours of volunteer work you get a free ticket to a concert this coming spring
Fundraising
- Make sure to send your hours and information about volunteer time to isv-uwmadison@gmail.com so Megan may log it
- Last semester, ISV UW-Madison Chapter logged over 166 total hours
- $492 was raised last semester in two weeks through Blackjack Dealing
- Megan can train you for the blackjack dealing which is a great opportunity to get money for the ISV group and is also a ton of fun
- All transportation is provided
- A certain amount of money is given per person that volunteers
- The blackjack players are actually playing for raffle tickets and not money, so that is why you don’t actually need to be an officially certified blackjack dealer
- You spend three and a half hours dealing at a time, usually it’s from about 7 to 11PM.
- There are two opportunities coming up
- February 10th, 2007 at Janesville starting at 7:30PM (so it would be necessary to leave here no later than 6 PM)
- February 17th, 2007 at the Monona Terrace starting at 8PM
- T-shirt sales continue
- Let Megan know if you would like a t-shirt by sending her an email with the size you want and your name
- T-shirts cost $10
- Megan was thinking of doing a possible ‘Mug Night’ for those people who are 21 and older
- The annual pizza sale will be held closer to the end of the semester
- If anyone has more ideas they should let Megan know
Alternate Spring Break
- This year we will be going to New Orleans to work with Habitat for Humanity in cleaning up the city from the hurricane damage that is still prevalent. Two vans with about will be leaving Madison on April 1st and will be coming back April 6th. There will be room enough for 14 people and if too many show interest the decision will come down to volunteer hours. There will be a better estimate of the trip expense when Bridget knows how many people are going. The group will be staying in a school for shelter during the week. Fore more information or if you are interested in going email Bridget (bkmcdonald@wisc.edu).
General News
- ISV, Inc. has promised us two scholarships towards summer ISV trips for people in our group. There are some requirements to be able to earn these scholarships which are for $1500 each. Volunteer more hours and you will have a better chance of getting this financial help.
- The next meeting will be February 21st. Be there!
